William Gairdner

- Biography
William ("Bill") Gairdner (born October 19, 1940 in Oakville, Ontario) is a retired track and field athlete from Canada, who represented his native country in the men's 400m hurdles and the men's decathlon at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. A resident of Willowdale, Ontario he claimed the silver medal in the decathlon event at the 1963 Pan American Games in Brazil.
After the 1964 Olympics, in 1967, Gairdner completed an M.A. in Structural Linguistics from Stanford University and an M.A. in English Literature and Creative Writing from the school in 1969. Gairdner went on to receive his Ph.D. in English Literature from Stanford in 1970.
Gairdner is and the author of seven books, including The Trouble with Canada, The Trouble with Democracy and Oh, Oh, Canada! which have been published by BPS Books.
