Turkey of the Week: Municipal Bureaucrats in Orono, Ontario

by Hugh MacIntyre - 19/08/2010

The Liberty Summer Seminar is by far my favourite annual political social gathering. It is an event where politicians, journalists, academics and students can gather around with a bottle of Liberty Ale, eat barbeque and learn about the philosophy and politics of freedom.

The yearly political fête takes place on the property of Marta and Lech Jaworski in bucolic Orono, Ontario. They cook amazing meals (for up to 100 people) and make the event (which is hosted by the Jaworski’s son, Peter) a terrific experience.

After 10 years, local authorities have suddenly decided to get tough with the Jaworski’s. As a result of an anonymous zoning complaint filed with the local municipality, the family face fines up to $50,000 for, among other things, using a residential property for commercial purposes.

“Our family escaped Poland for fear of reprisals in 1984 after my mom and dad handed out pro-democracy and pro-freedom literature from under my baby carriage,” notes Peter Jaworski. “It’s ironic and upsetting that they may now be facing charges in Canada for allowing me to host an event in support of those very same principles.”

A $50,000 fine might bankrupt the Jaworski family. It is an absurd punishment for doing nothing that should be punished. The municipality of Orono should be ashamed for threatening the livelihoods of these innocent people.

Fortunately, the incident has been generating a lot of media attention, including an August 19, 2010 front page story in the National Post.
