Big Bad Brian Mulroney

by Nate Hendley - 01/06/2010

We don’t like giving these awards out to Conservatives, but former Tory PM Brian Mulroney seems entirely deserving of this dishonour.

No matter what way you slice it, receiving cash from a lobbyist ($300,000 according to a recently completed inquiry, $225,000 according to Mulroney), taking seven years to declare it to the taxman, then having the gall to launch a libel suit against the federal government for daring to suggest he might take kickbacks, is pretty damn sleazy behavior.

Mulroney might not have committed any jail-worthy offences, but we certainly would have expected better conduct from a former Prime Minister.

If conservatives can get righteous about Jean Chretien and “Shawinigate” (and they should), then it’s incumbent upon the right to censure one of their own.

At the very least, Mulroney should have the decency to return the $2.1 million he won in an out-of-court settlement for his libel case.
