(Toronto) Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty deserves credit for considering privatization as an option to reduce the provincial deficit, says Gerry Nicholls, president of Libertas Post.
According to media reports, the Ontario government has hired experts to investigate the possibility of privatizing various provincial agencies.
“Privatization definitely makes sense,” says Nicholls. “Selling assets not only provides cash for a deficit-ridden government, but it would also provide consumers with more efficient service.”
Nicholls says he hopes the Ontario government opts to sell such agencies as the Liquor Control Board and the Ontario Lottery.
“Governments should not be in the business of selling alcohol or encouraging people to buy lottery tickets,” says Nicholls. “Some things re best left to the private sector.”
