A couple of weeks ago, a “secret” and “scary” video, taped by a Liberal “operative” was “released” to the public. I am guessing this was done as a public service announcement? Many a Liberal and NDP pundit starting their “hidden agenda” scare tactics (because we have nothing intelligent to say) again.
So I ask the question, what exactly is this so-called “hidden agenda?” I watched the tape. I saw the leader of the CONSERVATIVE Party of Canada; let me say that again, the leader of the CONSERVATIVE Party of Canada, talking about CONSERVATIVE ideals. I am pretty sure everyone (well, most people) at this point know that Stephen Harper is leader of the CONSERVATIVE Party, not the Liberal Party or the NDP, but the CONSERVATIVE Party. I know it even says so on the ballot when you go and vote. I know this because I actually exercise that right and I vote.
I am also pretty sure that it is public information in general that our Prime Minister is also the leader of the CONSERVATIVE Party of Canada. Yes, they are the one and the same. The Stephen Harper who is the one we have been calling our Prime Minister is also the leader of the CONSERVATIVE Party of Canada. I hear it mentioned on a regular basis in the news and common sense (I know this is a stretch here) tells me that most people would know this. I know Canadians tend to have short memories when it comes to politics (that would explain Bob Rae and the Liberal Party), but our Prime Minister was also the leader of the Canadian Alliance before the merger of the two federal CONSERVATIVE parties. I know that is public information as well. So far, I am not seeing anything about anything that was said on that tape that would indicate any “hidden agenda”, in fact just the opposite.
Anyone who follows politics has at least a general idea of what CONSERVATIVES generally believe in. Lower taxes, smaller government, law and order, free markets and so on. This is the sort of thing I saw the Prime Minister, who by the way, is also a CONSERVATIVE talking about on that “secret” and “scary” tape that was leaked by this brilliant Liberal “operative” who apparently has never been to a partisan event before. If this Liberal “operative” had ever been to a partisan event, that person would have known that party members discuss party ideals and ideologies at such events, and would also know that there is nothing “secret”” or “hidden” about them. I have been to literally hundreds of them. This is the type of event where this “scary” speech took place.
So, for arguments sake, let’s all agree that we all know that our Prime Minister is also leader of the CONSERVATIVE Party of Canada and is a CONSERVATIVE. Let’s also say that on that tape he was talking to a group of CONSERVATIVE Party members and talking about CONSERVATIVE Party ideals. Let’s just say that all these things are true. Now I know that it may not seem to everyone all the time that this is the case and we can all say we would do things differently (I am certainly the first one who has said it), it is easy to do when you are a backseat driver, but I am still not getting the “hidden agenda?”
I have to say, personally, I smiled when I saw that tape! I liked what I heard! I heard the leader of the CONSERVATIVE Party of Canada talking to other members of the CONSERVATIVE Party and sounding CONSERVATIVE. If that is what the pundits call a hidden agenda (and by the way, can we get some new ones, this silly business of having nothing to say but name calling is getting very tired) I say, bring it on!

It's a SECRET tape! It's exciting! Don't you see - it's a secret tape! Behind closed doors!
I have to concur with you, Wendy - there was nothing new on that tape at all. Frankly, it's the kind of stuff I wish Harper would say more of, not less of. I actually kind of wonder if the Tories didn't let that 'operative' leak the tape to the Liberal Party, just to play up any ties the Grits might have to the CBC.
By the way - it's good to see you on here! This Libertas Post thing's pretty cool, I have to admit.
Hi Walker!
Thanks! Really appreciate it. I just get so tired of the idiotic scare tactic of "hidden agendas." The "Hidden agenda" is that he mabye really be a Conservative! Ha! Guess what? That is the same name as the party he is leader of! I figured I would try and nip that moronic argument in the bud before any eletion starts and maybe (I know this is a stretch) but maybe, we can actually start talking policy and leadership??? I know, I know, call me crazy! ;-)
We can usually spot a Liberal in the room and have seen them taking pictures and stuff beofre so it would not surprise me - I think they did us a favour! The brilliant stategists that they are.
Good talking to you.
Wendy
Oh absolutely - the attempts to paint Stephen Harper as some sort of scary conservative have fallen flat, because he never made any bones about his conservative bona fides when he was in the business of getting himself elected.
If anything, I think he needs to prove his conservative bona fides more, these days!
Good talking to you, too :)
