
Repondents were almost evenly split on this question.
Some 30 percent of respondents said it should be a crime because “covered faces in public are a security nightmare.” Another 13 percent agreed with the concept on the grounds that “France has the right idea. This is a good way to enforce the principles of equality and openess.” And some eight percent based their “yes” vote on the fact that “Muslim countries such as Syria and Turkey do this already.”
Half of all respondents, however, disagreed with the idea, stating that a ban would violate religious freedom and might lead to further government clampdowns on personal attire.
