The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has some good news to report in the battle to reveal MP expenses. The CTF sent the following communique on June 9:
“Bowing to increasing public pressure, MPs from all parties that make-up the secretive Board of Internal Economy (BOIE) have agreed to meet with Auditor General (AG) Sheila Fraser next Monday June 14th. They will discuss the AG's – so far refused -- request to examine how $530 million is spent running Parliament.
Despite their refusal to open the books, MPs say they having nothing to hide. They say all their spending follows guidelines. Yet, last week taxpayers learned that one MP from BC spent $637,093 dollars on travel last year including frequently flying his family of four back and forth to Ottawa.
More recently it was revealed that at least one MP is paying ”rent” to family members while in Ottawa. The arrangement exceeds limits surrounding accommodation allowance by $12,000 a year.”
Outraged citizenry are encouraged to check back regularly on the CTF’s ”Reveal MP Expenses” campaign page. Truly pissed off partisans can donate to the CTF here.
